Superior Van Conversions for the fleet and trade automotive market

Approvals and Accreditations

Understanding the approvals, certifications and industry
accreditations behind our commercial vehicle conversions.

TYPE APPROVAL

Type Approval is an important part of delivering safe, compliant and consistent commercial vehicle conversions. Our certified type approvals demonstrate that specified vehicle conversions meet the required regulatory standards for their intended classification and application.

Our conversion processes operate in accordance with Vehicle Certification Agency Conformity of Production requirements and ISO 9001 quality management standards. Selected welfare vehicle builds also hold National Small Series Type Approval.

OUR APPROVALS AT A GLANCE

Lyndon Systems holds certified type approvals for a range of commercial vehicle platforms, supporting compliant and repeatable vehicle conversions across our approved specifications.

N1 TYPE APPROVAL

N1 type approval applies to light commercial vehicles designed primarily for carrying goods, with a maximum mass of up to 3.5 tonnes. This classification is commonly used for panel vans, service vehicles, mobile workshops, fleet vehicles and other specialist commercial vehicle conversions. .

Following the guidance from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, any modification to a vehicle must not compromise safety, structural integrity, or compliance with construction regulations.

WHY DO YOU NEED N1 TYPE APPROVAL?

When a base vehicle is converted, it must still meet:

  • Weight and load distribution limits
  • Braking and handling performance standards
  • Structural safety requirements
  • Roadworthiness and legal compliance

Without type approval, each vehicle would need to undergo individual inspection before registration.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF N1 TYPE APPROVAL?

  • Avoids the need for an individual IVA inspection where the vehicle is covered by the relevant type approval
  • Faster DVLA registration and deployment
  • Consistent quality across fleet builds
  • Reduced costs for multi-vehicle orders
  • Confidence that every vehicle meets certified standards

For businesses operating fleet conversions, service vans, or commercial vehicle upfits, N1 approval removes delays and keeps vehicles on the road.

M1 TYPE APPROVAL

M1 type approval applies to passenger vehicles designed to carry up to eight passengers in addition to the driver. It's relevant to applications such as crew van and passenger vehicle conversions where additional seating and occupant protection requirements apply.

WHY DO YOU NEED M1 APPROVAL?

According to UK approval standards, passenger vehicle conversions must comply with:

  • Seat and seatbelt anchorage strength testing
  • Crash safety and occupant protection requirements
  • Interior layout and access regulations
  • Safety systems aligned with passenger use

Where a conversion changes the vehicle's classification or passenger-carrying configuration, the appropriate approval must be obtained before the vehicle can be legally used in that configuration.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF M1 APPROVAL?

  • Fully compliant for passenger transport and crew use
  • Certified seating and restraint systems
  • Avoids individual IVA inspection where the vehicle is covered by the relevant type approval.
  • Easier insurance and regulatory acceptance
  • Greater flexibility for commercial and leisure applications

For businesses requiring crew transport vehicles or dual-purpose vans, M1 approval ensures safety and compliance are built in.

WHAT IS AN INDIVIDUAL VEHICLE APPROVAL?

Individual Vehicle Approval is an inspection process used to assess an individual vehicle against the required UK construction and safety standards before registration or use in certain circumstances.

It is typically required when:

  • A vehicle conversion falls outside an existing type approval
  • The build is bespoke or one-off
  • The vehicle is imported or produced in very low volume

Each vehicle is assessed individually before it can be registered with the DVLA.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IVA?

  • Enables legal registration of unique builds
  • Confirms compliance with safety standards
  • Allows flexibility for bespoke vehicle projects

For repeat fleet conversions covered by an existing type approval, type approval can provide a more consistent route than assessing each vehicle individually.

TYPE APPROVAL VS IVA

The difference between type approval and IVA comes down to scale, efficiency and timing.
The appropriate approval route depends on the vehicle, conversion and intended use. Our team can advise on the relevant requirements for your project.

TYPE APPROVAL IVA
Covers multiple vehicles of the same specification Applies to one vehicle at a time
Approval is granted before production Approval happens after the vehicle is built
No inspection required for each individual vehicle  Requires individual inspection and testing
Faster, more efficient for fleet conversions and repeat builds Adds time, cost and administrative complexity
Ensures consistency across all vehicles Best suited for one-off or highly bespoke conversions

WHY DOES THIS MATTER FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

For businesses operating fleets, vehicle compliance and conversion efficiency can have a direct impact on vehicle deployment and operational planning. Using an appropriate type approval can support consistent, repeatable conversion builds and help reduce the need for individual vehicle assessment where the approved specification applies.

Our approved conversion solutions can support:

  • Consistent specifications across fleet vehicles
  • Efficient repeat-build processes
  • Clearer compliance requirements
  • Reduced administrative requirements where applicable
  • Greater confidence in the approved conversion specification
